Malaurie Institute of Arctic Research Monaco-UVSQ welcomes Alexandr Gregorev as a new PhD student. His dissertation project is dedicated to “Queer Indigenous Identities in the Arctic”.

Alexandr Grigorev is a queer Indigenous researcher from the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in the Russian Arctic.

His PhD “Queer Indigenous Identities in the Arctic” explores gender and sexuality among Indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities across the circumpolar Arctic, focusing on how local spiritual beliefs and the demands of survival shape gender roles and identities.

Bringing together queer theory, Indigenous and decolonial studies, post-socialist perspectives, and Arctic anthropology, his work bridges multiple disciplines and contexts.

He combines archival research, oral histories, and digital ethnography, guided by an ethical and collaborative approach.

He pays special attention to online spaces were Arctic queer communities express identity and resistance. His work engages with multiple languages — Yakut, Russian, English, French, and Mandarin — to access diverse sources and narratives.

His project main goal is to address critical gaps in global LGBTQ+ and Indigenous scholarship and to amplify hidden histories and living realities. Through this work, I seek to challenge dominant frameworks and center Arctic queer and Indigenous perspectives on their own terms. His research will strengthen visibility, support community resilience, and foster dialogue across borders."
